I'm in love with my best friend..but he's sending me mixed signals. I know it's long but PLEASE HELP ME!!!

My best friend and I went out last year, but broke up and decided to be friends. From then on our relationship seemed to grow into something more. We've been mistaken for a couple before but he simply laughes it off whereas i cant seem to help wanting what they insinuate. One saturday night we were talking and the subject of significant others came up. Well i told him i was in love with one of my best friends. I didnt mention who but i gave him some obvious hints and he seemed pretty anxious to know who. When i wouldn't tell he dropped the whole thing. Lately he's been telling me about all these things he's done with a bunch of different girls from simple flirting to other things that i cant help but feel miserable over. We used to always say hi and playaround in the hallways, but he no longer seems to want to partake in the activities and seems to avoid me. I cant help this heartache in me and would like to know what he means by this and whether or not i should try and get over him
