Painting a built in cupboard and window seat?

We're building a built in linen cupboard and in the same room but at the other end, a window seat. The side of the cupboard has panelling and I'm thinking of painting the panelling and the door of the linen cupboard as well as the window seat white. Would straight white be too stark? How glossy should I go with the paint, I want to be able to wipe it clean of dust etc without too much hle.
