Is it ok to tell your boss a family member has ped away when it was really a good friend?

Silly.. it's happened. I had a very good friend of our family p away unexpectedly. In order not to get any rift from my manager I told her an uncle ped away. I felt that saying that would not cause any headaches with asking for the day off to attend a funeral.... is this ok?
